BiographyIn his autobiography, Royal does not indicate where she was born, but probably in Lincklaen, Chenango Co, or possibly in DeRuyter, Madison Co., NY. She had a brother, Philo Blackmar, who must have lived in or near Vernon, Oneida Co, NY, later becoming a travelling preacher in the Oneida Conference, still later locating as a farmer in Ohio. She was orphaned at age 11 and went to work. In the 1830 census at Washington, numerous Blackmans are described as in Chenango Co. She was an expert cloth weaver, able to make as much as ten yards daily, taking work on shares, and materially adding to the family income. She died during a thypoid epidemic.3,7

BiographyMLM: The Widow Horr's mother, Bethia Beverly Clark, was brought up in Providence RI, the dau. of Samuel Clark, merchant. Her first marriage was contracted with one Dr. Hoyle, who was many years older than Cecelia Houghton, lived in Carthage, NY, where he was a J.P., ardent Baptist, including the doctrine of immersion; sup't. of the interdenominational Sunday School, and organizer of the local lodge, sons of Temperance. He afterwards moved to Urbana, OH. Cecelia Stearnes' first marriage was contracted at age 19 years, with Walter Horr at Carthage; widowed, with one child, aged 21 years, to Walter Durant Horr. This married life was spent largely with Walter's father, Elijah Horr of the Central New York Conference, who introduced Oscar Allen Houghton, widower, to Ida Gilbert Delamater, widow. (H.A.H.) Elijah Horr Sr., and Walter Horr (who was ill a long time with consumption of the kidneys, following an accident) were in business in Carthage.

Katherine Houghton: This remarkable woman was married prior to Royal to a sea Capt. Horr - they had one son, an only child. They were from Province, R. I.. At 18 years old the father took the son to sea - out of Providence - both were drowned in a terrific sea storm. She met Royal and later married him - giving him 4 wonderfully capable & celebrated sons & some daughters too. She made a sampler about 2 times the size of this paper on brown linen. It gives her birth date - and the year 1817 which date she embroidered it. I have not seen it for many years - as my father gave it to my only bro. William Emmet Houghton. It was framed many years before I was born, to keep it in perfect condition. Royal's two other wives previous to Cecelia bore him at least ten other children.2
