BiographyMLM: son of Timothy and Zipporah (Williams) Phelps; he was admitted the academy at Chesterfield, NH and at Brattleboro, VT. He was admitted to the Windham Co. bar, June term of court, 1807, and afterwards moved to Townsend on Sep. 7, 1808. Prior to his marriage, his sister, Anstis, was his housekeeper. He was elected to the Vermont Council 1820-1822; probate judge for Westminster Dist. 1821-1822 and 1824; of Westminster Co. Court 1832-34. An active Democrat, member of Temperance Society.

Marlborough Hx: "He commenced the practice of law in Townshend, Vt., in 1808, and was a member of the Vermont Bar for more than thirty-seven years, during several of which he discharged the duties of County Judge and State Counsellor. In Sept., 1845, he removed to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he spent the remainder of his days..."; none of the descendants of Charles Phelps, senior, have resided in Marlborough since 1823

Rootsweb: Through the purchase of warrants located in Illinois and issued to soldiers of the Revolution, he became owner of numerous tracts land in that State. He gave these to Knox College a few months before his death.3,5

BiographyBT: Edward Jr. and Electa first settled in Guilford and about 1840, then moved to New York City (see Walworth, Hyde Genealogy, p. 515). The name of Edward Houghton, Jr., first appears in Trow's New York City directory in the issue for 1839, where he is given as a broker with offices in Wall Street, home in Wooster Street. His son Edward L., lived with him at the time. He appears in the directory later as in partnership with his cousin Royall Houghton. The last time his name appears in the directory is in 1853-54.2,9

"Capt. Jonathan CHASE was born at Swanzey, R. I., in 1778. In early life he went to Pomfret, Conn., where he learned the carpenter's trade. In 1799 he removed to Guilford and worked at his trade here until he enlisted in the army during the war of 1812. He was appointed lieutenant of a company, of cavalry, and was afterwards made captain. When his term of service expired he returned to Guilford and purchased a farm in the western part of the town, where he largely engaged in dairying. He was thrice married, first to Nancy STEWART, and second to Sophia STEWART, both daughters of Colonel Daniel STEWART, of Brattleboro. By these marriages there were seven children born. The third marriage was to Ruth HOUGHTON, daughter of Maj. Edward HOUGHTON. Capt. CHASE died in Guilford, in 1858." BiographyHe settled in Halifax, VT, 1820. By 1824 he removed to Whittingham VT, where he succeeded Smith & Boardman in the Centreville Store under the name Emory Greenleaf & Royal Houghton until about 1820. He was appointed P.M., May 25, 1826. In 1830 he bought an interest in the Houghton & Booth store, selling it in 1833, when he removed to Troy, NY. In 1834 he left for New York City, where he engaged in merchandise. He was burned out in the great fire of Dec. 1836, and afterwards engaged in the brokerage business with Edward Houghton Jr. He later gave this up and engaged in real estate in which he was successful. He resided at 25 E. 30th St. (Grammercy Park). He was a broker at 53 Wall St. and resided at 12 11th St. in the 1850 City Directory. (Ref.
